Five things you need to know about the Mercedes-Benz GLE

Discover the key features of one of the most desirable SUVs on the market - the Mercedes GLE
Five things you need to know about the Mercedes Benz GLE
The Mercedes-Benz GLE has carved itself out as one of the most desirable large SUVs on the market. In recent years it has grown to comfortably accommodate seven seats, while the interior has been overhauled to make it much more upmarket.
It sits between the GLC and plush GLS in the Mercedes range, meaning it has a great compromise of price and premium quality. Here are five things you need to know if you’re considering one.
Fantastic interior
The latest GLE has seen a massive leap in interior quality, both in the way it looks, the technology on board and the materials used. The most noticeable thing when you climb aboard is the twin widescreen displays that dominate the dashboard.
There’s ambient lighting aplenty too, which gives a real upmarket feel, while all the materials are of the highest quality. The seats are large and comfortable for long trips, and there are some cool technology upgrades such as natural voice control that aim to make life as easy as possible.
Loads of space for big families
The GLE is a large SUV and it can accommodate seven seats, which means larger families will be able to accommodate everyone on the school run or a weekend away. The rearmost seats fold away electrically when you don’t need them too, so there’s no faffing with confusing mechanisms.
Those sitting in the middle row will be most comfortable of all. There’s 70mm more space than there is in the older GLE, so even taller adults will have more legroom than they know what to do with.
There’s a coupe version
The coupe SUV craze continues on and the GLE is another model to offer this quirky take on the stylish 4x4 market. The idea is to give SUV buyers the sloping roof of a traditional coupe, sacrificing a little practicality for good looks.
That being said, with such impressive space in the rear of the regular model, it’s still more than spacious enough in the coupe.
Variety of engine options including hybrid
To make the GLE appealing to as many buyers as possible, there are a variety of engines on offer. There are three petrol, two diesels and one plug-in hybrid.
For the average buyer, the petrol will likely appeal, but for those who travel long distances regularly, a diesel could be your best bet. Finally, if you have the ability to recharge the hybrid’s battery at home, the hybrid could have seriously low running costs.
There’s an AMG
For the ultimate GLE, there are the Mercedes-AMG versions. This has been tuned by the firm’s performance division to provide more power and driving thrills.
The top-spec 63 model makes 603bhp from its 3.0-litre engine, shooting from 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds. On top of this, it gets styling upgrades to give it a sportier appearance.
