Early in the electric vehicle revolution, BMW introduced its ‘i’ range of cars. The halo model was the i8 supercar, but it also offered a funky city car called i3.
That model is still on sale today, with its unique styling standing the test of time to look fresh today. It has received a few updates over time to continue making it an appealing option in the electric vehicle market.
If you’re considering buying one, here are five things you should know.
Although many larger electric vehicles are now pushing past 200 miles of range, in the city car segment the i3 continues to be up there with the best of them, promising up to 190 miles from a charge in the i3 and 175 miles in the i3s.
Even for people with longer commutes, that’s more than enough range to get about without having to charge too often.
If you’re buying an electric car it could just be because you want the lower running costs, but for many people it’s an environmental decision. If this is the case, you can be happy that it’s not just the zero tailpipe emissions that make the i3 a green option.
For example, the carbon-fibre in its construction is made at a plant powered exclusively through wind power, while the battery can be recycled for use as storage for solar power when the car is destroyed. Meanwhile, the upholstery is made from natural materials.
BMW really leaned into the benefits of building an electric vehicle from the ground up. Without needing the space for an engine and its associated mechanics, the cabin can have a wide-open flat floor, while the boxy shape increases practicality.
It also has all the latest technology and uses high quality materials throughout, so you don’t have to give up any creature comforts to go green.
The regular i3 is joined by a sportier version called i3s. This model has a healthy 181bhp and 270Nm of torque, which makes it sprightly off the line, going from 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds – about the same as a hot hatch.
You also get more kit, such as bigger 20-inch alloy wheels, sport driving mode for increased performance and unique suspension to improve handling.
Charging your car is generally much cheaper than refuelling with petrol or diesel, particularly if you charge at home. However, public charge points can get a bit pricey, especially with faster charge rates.
With the i3 you get access to preferential charging rates for free, reducing the cost of charging one the road. If you regularly use Ionity and BP Pulse, there are monthly packages you can pay for further discounts.
