BMW’s new M4 Competition Convertible hits the road

Badged M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive

The new car now utilises a fabric roof, replacing the folding metal version found on its predecessor. According to BMW, the roof now weighs 40 percent less than before and can be opened or closed in just 18 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph.

Underneath the bonnet

Underneath the bonnet sits a 3.0-litre straight-six engine delivering 503bhp and 650Nm of torque. It helps the M4 to go from 0-60mph in just 3.5 seconds before reaching an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

One of the biggest changes

One of the biggest changes to the powertrain is the inclusion of all-wheel-drive for the first time. Distributed by BMW’s xDrive system, the change ensures better traction in poor conditions. However, the ability to choose between three drive modes - 4WD, 4WD Sport and two-wheel-drive - ensures that drivers will still find the M4 to be quite tail-happy when it needs to be.

There’s space for four people inside, while BMW’s latest M seats come fitted as standard. These can, however, be swapped out for more track-focused M Carbon bucket seats as an optional extra.

Prices for the new BMW M4 Convertible start from £81,915 and production is expected to start this month.
